What is Plate Solving?
Astrometric plate solving is the process of matching star patterns in an image to a known star catalogue to determine exactly where in the sky the image points — down to arcsecond precision.
What data is returned?
After solving: the Right Ascension and Declination of the image centre, field radius, pixel scale (arcseconds per pixel), image orientation, and identified named objects (stars, nebulae, galaxies, clusters).
Best images to use
Any photo taken through a telescope or telephoto lens with visible stars. Long exposures work best. The solver needs at least 10–20 stars to match the pattern — avoid very zoomed-in or saturated images.
